Care
Raise your lawn mower cutting height
Raise your lawn mower blade so grass stays 2-3" long. Longer grass promotes deeper root growth and a more drought-resistant lawn, shades the soil, and discourages weeds. Keep mower blade sharp to avoid shredding grass tips.
Provide regular maintenance
Replace mulch around shrubs and garden plants, and remove weeds. Remove thatch from lawns as needed.
Minimize or eliminate fertilizer
Encourage deep root growth by minimizing or eliminating the use of fertilizer. Test soil to see if nutrients are missing and add only needed fertilizer. University of Massachusetts soil testing laboratory
